Inbetween by Tara A. Fuller
My Thoughts: Inbetween is the first book in a cute new series about reapers falling in love with humans and vica versa. Reapers are trending now, such as the young adult Croak series or the more adult and very popular Charley Davidson books. They're dark, dangerous, mysterious and therefore fascinating, at least for me. So if I have any say I would say 'Keep them coming'. I've always imagined them in black from head to toe, carrying a large scythe and reaping souls for Death. But the reapers in Inbetween are significantly different from that image. For once, they aren't dressed in all black or cloaks. Moreover, there are three types of them; reapers for Hell, Heaven and the Inbetween. I really liked the uncommon reaper society the author has created.
"I think we should do something fun. It doesn't always have to be gloom and doom you know." I raised a brow. "You do know I'm dead, right?"
Finn is a disobedient reaper of the Inbetween. He fell in love with one of the reaped, almost ended up in Hell for saving her, and now he wants to save her again. But to do that he truly has to risk everything this time.
Emma thinks she might get crazy soon (again). She's having dreams that don't make any sense, and feels as if someone is trying to kill her.
I wasn't crazy for Finn or Emma, they were cute, but I loved Easton and Cash so much more. Easton, a reaper for Hell stole every scene he was in. He is a real reaper, unmerciful and stoic most of the time, but still a really great friend for Finn. And also the funniest character along with Cash. Cash is Emma's womanizer best friend, and it looks like he's going to be a main character in one of the later books.
The main plot line with Finn and Emma has managed to hold my attention, but it was just moderately interesting not utterly captivating. And I have to note: there was this one thing Finn and Emma did, I just couldn't accept no matter how desperate they were. It was wrong!
In addition to that the end felt flat to me, as the author went with the easiest, least creative choice.
Two things I absolutely adored were the title, both book and series, and the cover. I can't wait to see what they come up with for the next book! Overall, Inbetween was just an okay story for me, but since I liked Easton and Cash, chances are high that I'm going to read their stories, too, when they come out.
Title: Inbetween
Series: Kissed by Death #1
Author: Tara A. Fuller
Blurb from Goodreads:
Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.
It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul. Published August 28th 2012 by Entangled Teen
