Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
My Thoughts: Beautiful Disaster is a very divisive book. People either love it or hate it. I was somewhere in the middle, I didn't hate it, and while wasn't in love I enjoyed it enough.
Abby and Travis are highy dysfunctional, a trainwreck waiting to happen. And you can not look away, as it's sort of fascinating to watch what will happen next. Their story was unique and "exotic" to me, I have never read anything like this before. They were constantly fighting, breaking and making up, and doing very stupid things. (The whole Vegas arc was a huge disaster.) I've heard some interesting things, but if you ask my opinion on it I wouldn't label what they had as an abusive relationship. Abby chose Travis knowing very well what she would get.
Funny thing, all their friends could see they were no good together. But I think they were no good alone either.
"You two are a disaster." I smiled at the ceiling. "It doesn't matter what or why it is. When it's good, Kara...it's beautiful."
Their friends America (what a funny name) and Shepley were actually good for Travis and Abby, but I wouldn't want them as my friends in real life. But more importantly I would never want to be friends with Abby or Travis. They're definitely not my crowd. Kara, the roommate seemed like a reasonable person, but we don't see much of her, as she naturally didn't get along with the crazies a.k.a. Abby and Co.
Both Abby and Travis had a somehow rough childhood, and I think I understand why Abby craved the kind of love only Travis could give.
But I don't really get why Travis turned out the way he did. His family wasn't that bad. Okay, his mother had died and he had 4 brothers. But I couldn't believe that they beat him so much he became that good of a fighter. And he doesn't even trains now? WTF?
He was overly jealous, over protecting and well, sort of mad. To me it looked like that no matter how tough he acted, deep down he was just an insecure kid.
Beautiful Disaster is almost like fanfiction. The writing style, the over the top plot, the extreme characters just screamed fanfiction to me.
And while overall I liked this book, I'm not going to rate it. I couldn't rate it. This book could be 4 stars, but a one star as well. Or anything between.
Book Blurb
The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend America, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.
Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the charming college co-ed. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his charms, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’ apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
Have you read B.D? What do you think of it?
