One Moment by Kristina McBride
My thoughts: The first thing that drew me to One Moment was the cover. I just love the colors of it. The water green background together with the leg, that almost touches the water and it's reflection in the water make a fantastic image. I think this is a pretty damn good cover. It makes me want to know the story behind it.
Maggie, Joey, Adam, Shannon, Pete, Tanna. They were a close set of friends, yet they were hiding secrets from each other. Their friendship was like a rotten apple, so red and beautiful on the outside, but all kind of ugly inside.
The story is told from the first person POV of Maggie, who seems to have everything: a perfect boyfriend - Joey -, great friends and a loving family. Then something happens. One moment that shatters this safe bubble of happiness forever. Joey dies in an accident (?).
Maggie and their friends were all there when Joey jumped to his dead from the cliff, but Maggie doesn't remember how it happened.
And now, that Joey is dead his secrets are coming out. Maggie has to find out that her boyfriend wasn't perfect at all.
I'm sad to say I didn't like Maggie very much. She seemed too naive and weak. And things turned out in her favor too easily. Joey was the perfect boyfriend, a funny guy, daredevil,...spoiler mountains.
I kinda liked Shannon though. Adam was a little bit of a mystery. He knew things about Joey, but he kept his secret for many reasons.....
This could have been a good book, but it wasn't. I've found out all their secrets during the first 10 or so pages in the book. Everything was so obvious (to me). And it made the book a little boring. When something new came to light I was just "Yeah, I've already know that. Took you some time to realize it Maggs". I like books that deal with tough issues - secrets between friends, amnesia, death -, but I couldn't connect with the characters and the story was predictable. However the writing was quite good, that saved the book, and made it an okay read.
Title: One Moment
Author: Kristina McBride
Synopsis from Goodreads:
This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie’s life. Now it’s the one she’d do anything to forget. Maggie Reynolds remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party the night before. She remembers climbing the trail hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can’t she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below—dead?
As Maggie’s memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding? The latest novel from the author of The Tension of Opposites, One Moment is a mysterious, searing look at how an instant can change everything you believe about the world around you.
