The Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison
My Thoughts: Pen-el-o-pe Ma-rin. 6 syllables. That's good. One more time: Pen-el-o-pe Ma-rin. 12. Perfect.
tap, tap, tap, banana
Lo has OCD. She's very obsessive about numbers. In her mind there are good numbers. Like 3, 6 and 9. And bad numbers. Like 2 or 4. She also gets sudden, irresistible urges to steal. And she collects/hoards all kinds of stuffs/junks in her room.
(Btw, Pen-el-o-pe is 4 syllables. Ma-rin is 2 syllables. That's bad. But 4+2 equals 6. So that's good. Or how's this number mania working exactly?? Lol, just ignore me :D I'd be a weird, over-thinking OCD girl.)
Lo stumbles upon a murder of a stripper, Sapphire. And she has a new urge, to solve the murder. The murder happens in Neverland, an outskirt of Cleveland, full of homeless people. And that is where she meets Flynt. He is a homeless "artist", and almost as "weird" as Lo. :D
I liked The Butterfly Clues. Lo was different and interesting. But I wanted to know more about her OCD, like why she had it? Or about her family. She had a brother Oren, who's died about a year ago. And her family is not the same since his death. Her mom is almost catatonic, her dad is burying himself in work. Some things bugged me about her disease and family. Like the fact the she didn't take any medicine. I don't know too much about OCD, but was that a wise choice? I get that she is herself with her OCD, but I felt she didn't like that "maniac' side of herself too much. So maybe if she would take some pills, she would be better and still herself...
The Butterfly Clues is sort of similar to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer (which I loved). So if you liked ELaIC, I think you will like this one, too. :) [Btw, has anyone seen the new ELaIC movie?]
All in all, The Butterfly Clues was a great stand-alone novel. Lo's search of Sapphire's murder was interesting, and full of twists. And I loved the ending. I could see how the OCD thing could be annoying to some readers, but I was totally fine with it. In fact, I loved her "tap, tap, tap banana". And I'm a huge butterfly lover, so I absolutely adored the cover. Plus, it fits perfectly to the book as the story kind of revolves around Sapphire (and Lo)'s butterfly necklace.
Title: The Butterfly Clues
Author: Kate Ellison
Blurb from Goodreads:
Penelope (Lo) Marin has always loved to collect beautiful things. Her dad's consulting job means she's grown up moving from one rundown city to the next, and she's learned to cope by collecting (sometimes even stealing) quirky trinkets and souvenirs in each new place—possessions that allow her to feel at least some semblance of home. But in the year since her brother Oren's death, Lo's hoarding has blossomed into a full-blown, potentially dangerous obsession. She discovers a beautiful, antique butterfly pendant during a routine scour at a weekend flea market, and recognizes it as having been stolen from the home of a recently murdered girl known only as "Sapphire"—a girl just a few years older than Lo. As usual when Lo begins to obsess over something, she can't get the murder out of her mind.
As she attempts to piece together the mysterious "butterfly clues," with the unlikely help of a street artist named Flynt, Lo quickly finds herself caught up in a seedy, violent underworld much closer to home than she ever imagined—a world, she'll ultimately discover, that could hold the key to her brother's tragic death.
